Oral hygiene has a direct effect on whole body health and happiness. Approximately 90% of all adults and children in the Western world suffer from some sort of gum disease, and most people over 60 have no teeth at all. Why?
Dr. J.E. Phillips, who pioneered and lectured worldwide on the Blotting Technique realized that the tools and methods that most people use to clean their teeth and gums are completely inadequate for the task. He found a better way and invented the Blotting Brush. His Blotting Technique is a proven effective, simple and inexpensive method of total oral home health care to aid in achieving freedom from gum disease.
What is Blotting?
The Blotting Technique is a method of mouth care that effectively removes plaque. Plaque is the sticky, white substance that forms on teeth, between them and in the area between the teeth and gums, called the sulcus. Quite simply, plaque is the cause of dental disease. Regular brushing just moves this plaque around the mouth and under the gums, whereas the Blotting Technique is the only proven dental hygiene method that actually removes it from the mouth. This is the key to total oral health for a lifetime.
The Blotting Technique relies on “tapping”, rather than “side-to-side brushing”. To use the blotting brush, simply tap the bristles at a 45ยบ angle against your teeth where they meet your gums. This action breaks up accumulated plaque, and then sucks it up into the bristles. Continue to tap your entire gumline across the top row of teeth, then the bottom. The inner gumline should be tapped too. Periodically rinse the brush to remove the collected plaque. Suck the excess moisture out with your mouth, spit it out, and resume tapping. Continue until you are satisfied with the “clean feel” you achieve. Do not use toothpaste or essential oils with the blotting brush. You want the brush to be as empty as possible when you begin because it is designed to collect material from the mouth, not add to it.
The Blotting Technique is based on capillary action; that is the principle at work when a sponge soaks up liquid or when paint is drawn up into the bristles of a brush. Capillary action lifts and holds plaque in the brush so that it can be removed. By applying the Blotting Technique bad breath is removed without mouthwash because the cause of the bad breath (plague) is no longer present.
Frequent brushing and flossing, cleaning by the hygienist and gum surgery never remove periodontal disease. As time goes on this leads to more curettage (cutting off inflammed/infected tissue in the mouth), and eventually, extraction of the teeth. Improper brushing and flossing can actually cause periodontal disease. Blotting the plague out from under the gums daily will keep the disease from getting started and, in most cases, will heal the gums. The Blotting Brush is a specially designed bristled brush with much the same texture as a paint brush. It’s bristles are more compact than a regular brush and are formed into a wedge shape. It can draw plaque from underneath the gum line. Diligently applying the blotting technique will remedy gum diseases in over 98% of all cases. This will also keep the gum disease from recurring.
Dr Phillips also told his patients: “If you want to see what brushing does, just lay a rug on a dirty kitchen floor and brush or sweep around and onto the rug and when you lift the rug up, you will see that most of the dirt is packed at the edge of the rug.” The same thing happens when you brush your teeth. The sulcus (the groove between the gum and the tooth) is always the dirtiest after brushing. Regular brushing is primarily for cosmetic purposes. After brushing the surface of your teeth it is crucial to use the Blotting Brush.
